Our Doctors

Our team of doctors is comprised of experts. All of the surgeons at HNSA are leaders in their fields and provide our patients with the latest in surgical procedures and techniques—all with an unmatched standard of care.

Eric J. Dierks

M.D., D.M.D., F.A.C.S.

A founding partner of HNSA, Dr. Dierks earned his medical and dental degrees from the University of Louisville. One of just a handful of American surgeons to be Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery), Dr. Dierks completed his residency in these specialties in Delaware and in Texas. Dr. Dierks’ surgical practice consists of Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery, Craniomaxillofacial Trauma, Cleft Lip/Palate Surgery, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including complex dental implant surgery. Dr. Dierks is an Affiliate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at OHSU. He has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters on his various areas of interest and is frequently called upon to lecture both nationally and around the world.

Before he became a doctor, Dr. Dierks worked his way through college as an auto mechanic, and is still interested in automotive technology. Married with two grown children, Dr. Dierks also enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his family.

R. Bryan Bell

M.D., D.D.S, F.A.C.S.

Dr. Bell holds a dental degree from Creighton University and a medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He specializes in the surgical management of Head and Neck Cancer and Craniomaxillofacial Deformity. In addition to his private practice at HNSA, Dr. Bell currently serves as the Medical Director of the Providence Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Program and Clinic, an Investigator in the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, Attending Surgeon on the Trauma Service/OMFS Service at Legacy Emmanuel Medical Center, and as an Affiliate Professor at OHSU.

A Texas native, Dr. Bell enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. When not working, Dr. Bell also enjoys music, golf, fishing and travelling.

Allen Cheng

M.D., D.D.S., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Cheng earned his medical and dental degrees at the University of California, San Francisco. After completing his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Cheng finished fellowship training in both Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Cheng’s practice is comprised of Oral Surgery (dental extractions, dental implants, bone grafting, soft tissue grafting), Head and Neck Oncology, Head and Neck Reconstruction, Maxillofacial Trauma, and Jaw Alignment (Orthognathic) Surgery. His research interests are focused in the areas of Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Cheng currently serves as the Section Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and an Attending Surgeon for Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, Providence Portland Medical Center, and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

When he’s not happily helping patients, Dr. Cheng enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children. When he and his wife are not working, they are constantly looking for child friendly activities to consume the limitless energy exhibited by their two children.

James P. Cuyler

M.D., F.R.C.S.C.

Dr. Cuyler was born and raised in Canada and earned his medical degree at the University of Alberta. After becoming Board Certified in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery in both Canada and the United States, Dr. Cuyler pursued specialty training in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Pittsburgh University. After serving for 10 years as Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Director of Residency Training at the University of Alberta, Dr. Cuyler relocated to Portland. In addition to his Pediatric Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Practice, Dr. Cuyler is Chairman of the Division of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery for Legacy Portland Hospitals and the Pediatric Consultant for Otolaryngology at Providence St. Vincent Hospital.

Dr. Cuyler enjoys spending time with his wife and five children, traveling, car racing, and playing golf.

R. Sterling Hodgson


Dr. Hodgson received his medical degree from Oregon Health and Sciences University. Following graduation, he pursued sub-specialty fellowship training in Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery with the Portland Ear Medical Group. Dr. Hodgson’s practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of disorders that affect the ear, its surrounding structures, and their relationship to the brain. Dr. Hodgson has served as the Volunteer Otologist for the Craniofacial Disorders Clinic at Legacy Emanuel Children’s Hospital for over 15 years. There, he primarily serves children with cleft lip and palate, as well as other genetic disorders involving the head and neck.

In his free time, Dr. Hodgson enjoys playing sports and outdoor activities with his wife and two sons. An avid “soccer dad,” he enjoys going to his sons’ games and tournaments.

Ashish A. Patel

M.D., D.D.S., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Patel earned his dental and medical degrees from New York University. A certified Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Patel also holds additional certificates in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Head and Neck Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. He specializes in the removal of malignant and benign tumors of the head and neck, and microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck.

Dr. Patel lives in Portland with his wife and two children. He enjoys listening to music, playing guitar, and exploring the great outdoors.

Melissa S. Amundson


Dr Amundson received her dental degree at University of Illinois. She completed her residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, in 2012, which was the only level one trauma center in Dade County at the time. She followed this with 3 years of private practice and voluntary faculty at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. She then decided to return to academics in 2015 and recently completed an Advanced Trauma/CMF fellowship at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in trauma and post traumatic reconstruction. She has interests in maxillofacial trauma, dentoalveolar surgery, dental implants and orthognathic surgery. Additionally, she is involved in facial cosmetics, including injectables and “Liquid Facelift”. In her free time, she enjoys yoga, travelling, and volunteer mission work.
