Futures Outpatient Surgical Center

Futures Outpatient Surgical Center was established in 1993 by a visionary group of surgeons who wanted to create a safe, convenient, and economical alternative for their surgical patients. Futures is one of Oregon’s first licensed and Medicare accredited surgical centers. Being Medicare accredited means that extra effort was made to ensure that the highest standards are upheld. When you choose Futures, you choose experience!

Services Provided

Futures provides a convenient and safe alternative for out-patient surgery.  At Futures, you can expect state-of-the-art equipment and services for a variety of surgical specialties, including:

ENT (ears, nose, and throat)

We provide tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, ear tubes procedures, tympanoplasty, septoplasty, and rhinoplasty.

Plastic Surgery

We provide breast reduction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, face lift, liposuction, rhinoplasty, facial resurfacing, blepharoplasy, scar revision, and more.

Orthognathic

Orthognathic treatment involves the repositioning of facial bones to correct under, over, and mal-aligned bites. We are one of only a very few facilities that perform these procedures.

Dental Procedures

Our services include dental implants and extractions.

Pediatric Restorations with General Anesthesia

Our anesthesiologists and staff have highly specialized experience and training to provide the safest care for your child. As parents, you will have the opportunity to stay with your child in the pre-operative area before surgery and again, when safe, in the post anesthesia care unit. Nothing comforts a child more than the warmth and love that only a parent can provide.

Hand Surgery

We offer treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve and tendon reconstruction, ulnar nerve transposition, and reduction and repair of fractures.

Financial Policy

We accept most major health plans and credit cards. We match in-network benefits for our out-of-network patients.  A quotation for surgical fees will be given to you at your consultation. The total you owe will not be known until your insurance reviews the claim. If you are having a cosmetic procedure or a procedure that is not covered by your insurance, we do require payment from you two weeks prior to surgery. By choosing Futures Outpatient Surgical Center, you can be assured of significantly reducing your out-of-pocket expenses. In the event of cancellation less than 24 hours prior to your scheduled surgery, a cancellation fee of $100 may be retained. Please contact our business office for a personal consultation and details of our credit policies at (503) 224-8224.

Before Your Surgical Procedure

You will be asked to arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of your procedure. When you arrive, you may be asked for a copy of your insurance card, to sign your surgical consent, and to complete a health history form for anesthesia purposes.

For your safety, you will be instructed not to eat or drink anything after midnight if you are receiving general anesthesia or IV sedation. Your surgery may be cancelled if you fail to follow these instructions. Additionally, your anesthesiologist will try to contact you the night before surgery to learn more about you and your needs and to discuss anesthesia options that will work for you.

Please bring a complete list of your current medications, including any supplements you may be taking. If you are taking medications that thin the blood, your doctor will ask you to stop taking them two to three weeks prior to your surgery. There are a number of other medications which also require that special considerations be made prior to surgery. You doctor will provide you with a complete list of these medications. You may take any heart or diabetic medications with a small amount of water the morning of your surgery. If you are diabetic we will monitor your blood sugar levels throughout your stay at Futures.

Once you have checked in at Futures, a nurse will escort you to our pre-operative area. Once there, you will be asked to change into one of our patient gowns. The nurse will do a physical assessment and take your vital signs. You are welcome to have a family member during this time.  However, small children should be left at home. Your doctor will see you in the pre-operative area to answer any question you may have.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unless otherwise arranged, you will need to have a responsible adult with you during the first 24 hours after surgery if you have had sedation or general anesthesia. This is for your safety.

Be sure to leave valuables, such as jewelry, at home and wear loose, comfortable clothes that will be easy to put on after your surgical procedure is performed.

In the Operating Room

From the pre-operative area your nurse will escort you to the operating room. The operating room environment is kept cool to keep the surgical team comfortable in their warm sterile attire, and to minimize the growth of microorganisms. Your patient gown, or special blanket, will be attached to a blower that circulates warm air around you, making you feel warm and comfortable. You will also be covered in blankets to ensure comfort and privacy.

Once your procedure is complete, you will be transferred to the Futures Surgery Center post anesthesia care unit for monitoring and discharge instructions.

After Your Surgery

The post anesthesia care unit, or recovery room, is where you will wake up after your procedure. You will have a nurse with specialized training continually monitoring your health status during this time. The nurse with both help you manage your pain and tend to the surgical site. Most patients will stay in the recovery room for one to two hours after surgery.  Once you are alert, our staff will bring a family member to the recovery room and discharge instructions will be discussed. Our nurses will teach you and your family member how to manage your care at home. You will be provided with written instructions, and your doctor's contact information to use should you require help. The day after surgery, a nurse will contact you to check-in and see how you are doing, and answer any questions you have.

Medications to Discontinue Preoperatively and/or Postoperatively

Patients having surgery must discontinue medications that contain aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and diet pills at least two weeks before surgery. This includes, but is not limited to, Phen-Fen (phentermine and fenfluramine), Redux®, and other prescriptions and non-prescription diet pills.

Aspirin has an affect on your blood's ability to clot and could increase your tendency to bleed during surgery and into the post-operative period. Reaction between diet pills and anesthetic drugs could result in disturbances in your heart rhythms and could even cause cardiac arrest or death.

If you need minor pain medication, please take Tylenol®. Tylenol® is available at your pharmacy without a prescription and provides relief much like aspirin. If you are allergic to Tylenol® or unable to take it for other reason, please notify us so we might arrange for a suitable substitute.

You must discontinue these medications at least two weeks prior to surgery. Your physician will provide you with a complete list of medications that should not be taken before surgery. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of your procedure.
